Palliative Care
Palliative care is specialized medical care designed for individuals living with serious illnesses, such as cancer or heart failure. Patients in palliative care may receive medical treatment for their symptoms or receive palliative care alongside treatment aimed at curing their underlying condition. The primary objective of palliative care is to enhance the overall quality of life for the patient and their family.
When someone enrolls in hospice care, they automatically receive palliative care. However, if you believe you might benefit from palliative care beyond a hospice program, you can seek a referral from your physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant. Many hospitals now offer palliative care services, and many hospices have separate palliative care groups that operate independently of their hospice services.
Hospice Care Providers
Hospice services are available to individuals who have exhausted curative treatment options and have a life expectancy of six months or less. The primary focus of hospice care is managing pain and symptoms. Most hospices provide visits from nurses, home health aides, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers. Additionally, they offer bereavement services to the patient’s friends and family members.
